Chapter Ten

The next day Brooke felt on edge. She watched Hailey and Claire with hawk-like supervision. There didn’t seem to be any animosity between them she could see. They did, however, interact very little. It must be a completely different atmosphere in the house when it is just them.

Fortunately, Brooke only had a half-day at school, which meant she could spend the rest of the day at home. It was the perfect time to get in more painting time. Hailey agreed to an impromptu modeling session, which delighted Brooke to no end.

When it came to asking Claire if she wouldn’t mind giving them the living room space, she groaned. “This wasn’t on the schedule.”

That much was true, but Brooke pinched the bridge of her nose in exasperation. She sometimes just wished Claire was happier to accommodate and support her.

“It’s only two hours. I can even set up a nice workspace for you in the bedroom if you’d rather stay home than go to a cafe.”

Hailey pulled a face but quickly hid it.

“No, it’s alright,” she sighed. “I do feel a bit crazy. Like I’m getting chased out of my house. First my office, now the living room.”

“So, is it fine or not?” Hailey asked.

Claire shot her a contemptuous look. “It’s fine,” she said through gritted teeth before stalking into the bedroom.

Brooke fiddled with the hem of her sleeve. Hailey tilted her head at Brooke like a curious dog. “You seem anxious. Are you okay?”

Brooke looked up and gave her a wan smile. “Yeah, I think so. I just, Claire seems really antsy and on edge. I am beginning to think she is struggling with sharing her space.”

“That much is obvious,” Hailey said dryly.

She waited for a moment before speaking again. “I can leave, if you want me to.”

Brooke looked up at her in surprise. “No! I mean, I don’t want you to go. I’m enjoying having you here.”

“I know you are. I love being here! But I don’t want to cause stress in your relationship.”

Brooke considered the situation. She couldn’t understand why Claire was acting so childishly. If she had provided her with a concrete reason as to why she didn’t like Hailey, then maybe…

Brooke let out a sigh to end all sighs.

“Woah! You’re almost fully deflated!” Hailey scooped some air with her hands and swung it back towards Brooke.

Brooke snorted a laugh. “I should talk with her. Maybe I will suggest a romantic dinner date tonight.”

“I think that’s a great idea. I’ll hold the fort.”

Brooke nodded, satisfied with her plan. “And now, onwards! To the canvas!”

They set up the scene with the usual set of pillows and debris. Once it was all laid out carefully, Hailey stripped out of her clothes and lay in position. Fortunately for her, the painting was nearly finished. After that, Brooke simply needed to get all the shading and lighting correct.

“Nearly done with this first painting, and then I think we can even begin with the second one today!”

“Ooh, very exciting,” Hailey said, her arms behind her head.
